Top 10 Places To Visit In Karakol

Karakol, Kyrgyzstan

Karakol, a charming town on the eastern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake, is a gateway to Kyrgyzstan's most stunning landscapes. From snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes to historical sites and vibrant culture, Karakol has something for every traveler! Here are the top 10 must-visit places in Karakol:

1. Holy Trinity Cathedral

This 1869 Russian Orthodox Church recalls Karakol’s time as a garrison town on the edge of the Russian Empire. Back then, it was a chapel for Cossacks and other troops — those who were a long way from home and perhaps wanted to pray for their families and safe passage on the return journey. During Soviet times, the church building took on many different roles, including as a dance hall for some years. Today, it serves as one of the town’s primary landmarks.

2. Dungan Mosque

Dungan mosque is a Chinese architect, that has been built without any nails. In 1933-43 the mosque remained closed but still, people continued to use it as a place of worship. At this point, the mosque acts as a great attraction for visitors because of its unique architecture. Usually, women are not allowed to enter the mosque but friendly guards allow the guests to peep in on special requests.

3. Przhevalsky Memorial Museum

Przhevalsky Museum and memorial situated outside the city was opened in 1957 in Karakol. This was set up after the Russian explorer Nikolay Przhevalsky died in 1888. With a distance of meters, there is a memorial of the explorer and his tomb. There is a cross fixed on the tomb with the inscribed names and the life span.

4. Russian Quarter and Gingerbread Houses

When you think of Central Asia, you probably picture yurts before you conjure images of sweet cottages, but Karakol’s Russian Quarter is full of intricately carved wooden gingerbread houses, and other architecture from the last two centuries. These cottages are remnants of Karakol’s intriguing history as a frontier town on the edges of the Russian empire. Russian merchants built beautiful, colorful houses — the more successful the merchant, the more elaborate the house.

5. Tatar Mosque

This is the oldest mosque in Karakol and was built during the 19th century by the Tatar people who moved to the area during the rise of the Russian Empire. This unusual mosque has had an unusual history: the Soviet Union repurposed it as a local movie theater during the mid-20th century! Its architectural details — green roof, blue dome, profiled lancet arches above windows, and pilasters make it worth a visit just to see the tremendous variation in how Karakol's different ethnic groups built their places of worship.

6. Hot Springs

Ak-Suu hot Springs is one of the popular hot springs located closer to the town. In 2017, it was planned that the place would feature an outdoor pool near the lower end of the access road. It was better timed with the hike called Altyn Arshan, where the hiker can spend their night in the nearby hostel and enjoy soaking themselves in the hot spring before or after the trekking. The sulfurous odor of the natural hot spring helps the trekkers to relax their souls which makes this the best thing to do in Karakol.

7. Barskoon Waterfalls

Barskoon Waterfalls, located in the stunning Barskoon Gorge, are one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kyrgyzstan.
