Burana Tower

Burana Tower is a large minaret dated of IX AD. The tower, along with grave markers, some earthworks and the remnants of a castle and three mausoleums, is all that remains of the ancient city of Balasagyn, which was established by the Karakhanids at the end of the IX century. Current height of tower is 25 m which is about half less of its original height of 45 m. An external staircase and steep, winding stairway inside the tower enables visitors to climb to the top.

Departure from Bishkek in the morning, drive along Boom and Konorchok Gorges. On the way stops by yurts of local families to taste traditional kyrgyz drinks - maksym and kymys, and also dried cheese product - kurut. The road goes by pastures with herds of horses, sheeps and goats. Mileage - 80 km, about 1.5 hours.

Excursion on Burana Tower professional Guide who knows many interesting facts and legends related to the Burana. One of legends says that a witch warned a local king that his newly-born daughter would die once she reached the age of eighteen. To protect her, he built a tall tower where he sequestered his daughter. No one entered the tower, except the daughter's servant who brought her food. The daughter grew up alone and became a beautiful young lady. One day, however, a poisonous spider was hiding in the food brought by the servant. The spider bit the girl, and she died in the tower, at the age of eighteen.

Return to Bishkek in the afternoon.

In summer time as extension to this excursion an exciting rafting for 1 to 2 hours in Boom Gorge can be arranged as well as lunch at kyrgyz family house with traditional dishes and folklore show (at extra fee). This excursion can be combined with visit to Chon-Kemin Nature Park and 1 overnight at the Guest House there.
