Bishkek - Sonkul Lake - Bishkek
Son-Kul is a mountain lake located in the Tian-Shan Mountain Range at an altitude of 3016 m. Son-Kul is used by the shepherds from the Kochkor, Naryn, and At-Bashi regions as a jailoo – a pasture during the summer months. It is considered the pearl of Kyrgyz jailoos. The road to Song-Kul winds through mountainous terrain until it seems to disappear into the very sky itself. This is probably why Song-Kul is translated in Kyrgyz as “the last lake”
The surroundings of Son-Kul are completely untouched. Perhaps the most surprising fact is that around Son-Kul, you will never see a tree or even a shrub, but there a plenty of medical herbs and various flowers
The total area of the lake is 275 sq. km., it is 15 m . deep, and it is situated at 3016 m. above sea level. In winter the lake is covered with thick (1,5 m.) ice. The lake is a favorite place for wild geese, ducks, and seagulls. The only river flowing out of the lake is Son-Kul with a cascade of waterfalls in a rocky Kok-Dzherty Gorge 4 km away from the lake. The river is the tributary of the largest Tien-Shan river – the Naryn River.
